    Got a 3270 Recommendation?

    Locked

I asked to identify a solution for a piece of 3270 emulation software. Does anyone have a good recommendation for me (other than using google to help my search)?

      Well, it depends

The answer partly depends on your needs…the coolest solution are some emulators that are web-page plug-ins (e.g. web term)

Your standard fat-client emulators are either Attachmate Extra! or IBM Personal Communcations.

If you only need TN/3270, there are tons of solutions, low cost, and even some free.

Don’t forget that the need for printing from the mainframe often drives the need for a more robust emulator…you typcially cannot do host-addresable printing with tn3270.

From years ago, my experience was that IBM worked ok, but was feature limited, and tended to have a lot of bugs. Attachmate could do anything (connect to VT, X-windows, and 3270, support all terminal mods, print properly from the host, etc), but was a bit more complex to setup.

Cost: you’re looking at about $200 or less for one or two seats of any of these products. For larger quantities, expect to pay around $50 a seat for something like IBM or Attachmate and in the $20 per seat range for a simpler TN3270 app like Passport.

Always better to get a recommendation from someone who has actually worked with these types of things before….
