    Graphics card

    Locked

    by barbara.griffin ·

Win98 environment, S3Trio 3D card installed with correct drivers. Display settings include 16 colors, 256 colors, High color (16-bit) but can only get system to display 16 colors. Can select 256 colors or High Color but cannot get either to “stick”. At reboot, defaults back to 16 colors and message states conflict between hardware and settings. How do I get 256 colors to “stick”.

      Hi,

Normally you’ll have problems with inability to select or keep display resolutions and colour depths due to the drivers.

When you say “correct”, you mean off the CD that came with the card? Unfortunately that doesn’t necessarily mean “correct”.

Many manufacturers put out products far too quickly and I’ve seen plenty of supplied drivers that are basically rubbish.

Of course by the time you buy the product, install it and realise this, they usually have updated drivers on the net for download.

I suggest you check for later drivers than the ones you have…

      Cheers,
      Tim.

Thanks, Tim. Not my computer – supposed to be “fixing” it for customer. Checked ID of card by physically taking it out and also using utility on s3graphics.com site – that’s how I feel sure I have the “right” drivers now.

I had a problem very similar to this and the solution was that the patches had not been installed on the motherboard.

      Anything is worth a try.

Thanks Alan. Customer’s computer. Bought 2nd hand. Originally had Win95. Upgraded to Win98SE. Used to work with 256 colors but not since some other dummy (not me!) reloaded Win 98 for her. So it SHOULDN’T be the motherboard, should it?

Update / Install the AGP mini-port driver for the motherboard. (even if the card is PCI)

      Install DirectX 7 or 8.1

Download the latest “reference drivers from http://www.s3graphics.com

Also, check the video card and motherboard mfgs web sites fro BIOS updates.

Many times a “graphics” problem is a BIOS error that has been corrected.

Thanks again, Chas. As I said, have tried everything you suggested but cannot get 256 colors to “stick”. Can’t upgrade BIOS as cannot identify correct upgrade on Intel site. So reluctantly giving up.
