Group Policy Remote access

By Richard.Dugger ·
We're trying to edit a group policy remotely on a p/c on our network but it fails because we either have "no appropriate rights" details "no network path not found" (it pings ok and is seen on the network). We were able to do it a couple of months ago but now cannot. XP sp2 is applied, ports opened and firewall disabled, we tried it from a non sp2 system with the same results. We can mmc a computer management snap-in but not group policy object editor snap-in. Any ideas?

Is this a local policy on a system?

Or is it a site, domain or OU applied GPO?

Is the domain Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 based?

With Windows 2003, you should be using GPMC and not the normal GPO MMC.

For site, domain and OU GPO's you will need to be a domain administrator to modify those, unless you have been granted specific permissions to modify them.

Is the remote registry service on the remote computer running? Also, you need to add an account with the right rights, an administrative account for the remote computer.

Also, I havent tested this but it may work with some tweaking. Run through the command line or set up a shortcut.
runas /profile /env /user:mydomain\admin "mmc %windir%\system32\dsa.msc"
