Groupwise Auto Delete

It has recently come to my attention that some users are loosing documents that are older that 90 or so days old. After checking their environment settings I discovered that the option to automatically delete after xx days has been checked but is greyed out and cannot be changed, is there a security setting preventing users from changing this, if so how can it be changed. any suggestions are appreciated
