---> Essentials on Network Security!

By sabrodiesel2000 ·
First, know what you have, and what you need to protect. Your business needs and the value of the information kept on the network should determine the network architecture and which solutions are employed. When building the network, keep each service separate from each other, so that each can have its own security measures in place.

Here's how you can start securing your network:
(1) Use a firewall to protect the enterprise network from the Internet
(2) Use a firewall to separate the enterprise Intranet from external customers or public

Three more detailed security measures you can take;
(1) Install a host- based IDS system on the-commerce server to safeguard information such as customer names, addresses, purchasing history and more importantly, credit card information.
(2) Implement Network Address Translation (NAT) to help protect the IP addresses of the machines in both all its networks.
(3) Insert a network-based IDS into the Perimeter network to help identify intrusion attempts.

One final recommendation for network design;
-System maintenance
-Proxy servers
-FTP Drop boxes

Establishing separate networks within the company allows for better control over the access to these servers and services

These were the best practices for securing networks. It is important to start by thinking about your business needs, because those will determine network architecture and which solutions are employed...
