How can I patch the kernel. I want to install guard dog for security & ip filtering. But I am unable to install it. Let me know the details for that.

su to root,
apply the patch against the appropriate section of the kernel

make configure, ( unless you saved kernel config data, then just use that as the configure options )
make install.

when working with the kernel you have to be root user.
otherwise the process is the same as applying a patch for any other program.

which distro are you using?
there may be a package of guarddog for it, which will tell you if you need to rebuild the kernel or install if not.
