HAL error

I receive the following message when starting a Windows XP Professional with SP2 machine.

“Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \system\hal.dll. Plese reinstall a copy of the above file.”

This message appears during restart of the computer, before the Windows GUI begins to load.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
