Half of RAM does not load on boot

By tim ·
Running NT Server; P3-450; 3 RAM slots

Recently my 128M of RAM (single slot) just
started showing 64K at boot up. I thought the
RAM was bad, so I replaced it (and upgraded)
with three 256M RAM. It should have shown
768M of RAM, but only shows384M, exactly
half again. Obviously not a seating issue.
Anyone have any clues?

thx in advance
tim

If the shortage in memory reported is showing up before NT loads, then I think the next culprit to look for would be the motherboard. Try each DIMM one at a time in a slot other than the one that the original DIMM sat in.

If your memory is still underreported, you might just try it once in a different PC before trying another motherboard in your server. Good luck.

Hi,

I'd start checking with just one memory module, and look if it detects it correct. There is always the possibility that your mobo cannot support more the 384Mb, check your mobo manual. Another possibility is that the memory modules are the wrong type, but most of all I suspect you got a fried mobo.

Greetz,

Pete

The memory is OK.
You have a shorted memory line on the motherboard.
Usually this is a piece of dirt on the leads of the memory controller chip on the motherboard.
Look at the controller chip and clean it with a soft mascara or paint brush.
You can **** on it with compressed air, but be very careful. A compressed air nozzle puts a static charge on the air, and this can destroy the chip. (Been there, done that.)
Better, just **** the dust out with normal lung power. Plus your breath is veryhumid, so it is not a serious hazard. (Humidity is an enemy of static.)
Regards, Chris
