In both Word and Excel (office xp) running on windows XP, when in the application I click "file" then "open" and get the "open" dialog box. The default "look in:" location is my documents. If I click the drop down menu next to "look in:" the application freezes and I get the not responding error. Has anybody else experienced this problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Is yours a stand-alone computer or a networked one? If it is networked, do you have any network drives mapped? This might possibly occur due to large number of files in the network drive.. Have a look at this Microsoft Article. This might be what you are looking for..
I would start with the suggestion in answer 1 and if the problem is not resolved check for obsolete mapped drives/shares. To test this follow these steps:
Open Windows Explorer. Under My Computer, right-click each network share listed. If you find one or more that take a very long time to show the pop-up menu it is probably invalid. If these are no longer valid shares, disconnect them (right-click the share, click Disconnect from the pop-up menu).
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
