hard disk disappears at each boot!

By jfsalazar ·
Hi all,
After reinstalling succesfully XP on my PC with lots of problems due to the amount of viruses out there, my computer do not "detect" the second disk:
. it is recognized at the BIOS
. it has been partitioned and formated, even I moved over there the TEMP folder
. the partition was "activated"
Every time I boot my pc the disk "disappears" (from explorer, from XP's disk management) but after running the "new hardware wizard" it "re-appears" and works just "fine".
Please your help will be appreciated,

Thanks but it's not just a matter of "visibility". 2nd hard disk is not actually being recognized until "new hardware wizard" is run. e.g. I have the temp folder in a partition of that disk so when not recognized even installation programs fail. In safe mod disks appear w/o problems. FYI: DSK(1)(Part1)20GB, DSK(2)(Part1)10GB. Thanks again,

Just wanted to make it clearer: it's not just a matter of "visibility". 2nd hard disk is not actually being recognized until "new hardware wizard" is run. e.g. I have the temp folder in a partition of that disk so when not recognized even installation programs fail. Real shot in the dark here, but worth a look. When drive "appears" compare its settings to other hard drive in device manager. Look at drive and IDE controller settings. Maybe you can get a clue there.

Thanks for your comments, but settings are the same: same controller driver, same parameters. Today in the morning I've tried to use my Asus USB CD-Writer but recordings fail with "fixation errors". I have to mention that this same HW configuration was working perfect before re-installing... I'm considering reformatting, this time no Internet ... Windows is driving me crazy ...

Are you sure that you have gotten rid of any viruses on the system?

How to be completely sure? After fighting a lot my PC seems to be working (except for the problems described before): no more IE pop-ups, no more tasks list or regedit closing at start, etc. My weapons? At first Norton Antivirus, then Spybot, then Spyware Blaster and Registry Mechanic. Not to mention web analyzers like Trend Micro, McAffee. Thanks for your reply!
