    Locked

    by virendra argekar ·

    I bought a new system . AMD 1000 Mhz.
    Win ME pre-installed. 1st thing I did was that i installed Norton Anti-virus 2000 .
Registered to receive LiveUpdate and all that stuff … I was told to restart and then Live Update would take place .
But, after restarting . it said a norton’s .dll file ( I forgot the name ) had replaced the one of Win ME !!!!!!
It said system can not proceed . Try installing the operating system again !

What should i do ? Then I did FDISK and auto format takes place during the setup .
    Then while scanning registry .
copying files necessary to contine you with setup….

    then an error comes…
REMOVE ANY FLOPPY DISKS FROM YOUR DRIVE AND PRESS ANY KEY TO RESTART …

What is this ! Man…. HELP ME ….
    FAST !

It sounds like you hosed your OS. If you did then you will need to reinstall it. If you can still get into ME in safe mode then use system file checker to revert back to the old .dll.

What error comes up? How did run FDISK? From what disk? These big hard drive, got to use the disk from the manufacture to do partition and fdisk…
I still take the new pc to where I got it from and get new one. Don’t bang the head against the wall.

      Hi there,
I have just answered an question that nearly the same as you. It happened on a laptop with Win Me preinstall. And the user did the same at you, Fdisk, format (hell !). The following is my answer to his question, and it’s the same to your question too.

First of all, since you have just purchased it, go back and change a new one.
Now, about the error. Do you know that you should not do Fdisk and formatting? When the problem happened, you could just do what the computer said – reinstall Windows Me again. And I think everything would be fine. Even if you intend to uninstall and reinstall all the softwares in that computer, you should not do fdisk. All you need is to clear the hard drive, and reinstall everything. When you try to fix the problem, you made it worse.
Well, since you have already fdisk and format the hard drive, I guess the problem that you ran in may be because of your mistake when doing fdisk. I am not sure about that since I don’t hand on troubleshoot your computer. It also can be your Win Me version. Some Windows version that included with the computer when sold are not a complete version.

Something most have not mentioned here, since you fdisk the drive, which should not really cause any problems, did you fdisk /mbr, its very possible that norton changed something in the masterboot record i would recommend trying the fdisk /mbr do it twice at least since sometimes the first time will not always reset it.

What exactly do you mean by “Doing FDISK” .
This is how you should do it . Boot the PC with a startup disk ( make it from another system ). At dos prompt type FDISK . then delete the primary and logical partitions , notice the warning . then recreate the primary and logical partitions . restart the system using the startup disk “with CD ROM support ” . On DOS prompt type format c: /s .Format rest of the logical partitions ( without /s ). then change to the CD ROM and type setup . It should work now …..

Even after you sucessfully recover your operating system. You initial problem started when you installed Norton Anti-virus 2000. I think because you have Windows ME you can only install Norton Anti-virus 2001 for Win.ME
