      Password to harddisk?

Why dont you try to format it ?

      Sorry, but no help here

In reply to Hard disk Password breaking

Sorry, but on this forum we do not provide password help of any kind for any reason.

You will have to call the manufacturer (Acer) or the company you purchased the system from.

I would also like to point out that your friend really isn’t a friend after all, are they?

First thing you need to do

      by jdclyde ·

In reply to Hard disk Password breaking

      is go slap your “friend”.

Then have your “friend” prove to the manufacturers that you and he are not scumbag thiefs, and they will help you out.

If you are a scumbag thief, then you will rot in hell.

Good luck with that and have a great day.

      Harddrive Password

      Password to the harddrive???

Isn’t this set in BIOS? Do harddrives actually have low layer passwords that stores the password on the firmware of the drive??

Even laptops have jumpers to reset bios passwords..

Well you’ll have to have some technical ability..

        In reply to Harddrive Password

In the 21st Century, yes there are hard drive passwords set at low layers where moving the drive to another computer still won’t give you access.

Also, many laptops (and other computers as well) no longer have jumpers to reset bios passwords AND removing the CMOS battery no longer “drains” or “erases” the storage of that password.

Time to bring your skills up to date.

LED_IT – you have the wrong end of the stick …in fact –

        by older mycroft ·

        In reply to Harddrive Password

THAT particular stick is well past its ‘sell-by’ date.

Laptop passwords are no longer stored anywhere near the BIOS. They are either on an EEPROM or a custom chip, neither of which requires power since they are both solid-state.

Many mobos are now jumper-less, since the adjusters are now soft.

Best not to slag the Poster’s technical ability when you are so lacking yourself. 😀

In reply to LED_IT – you have the wrong end of the stick …in fact –

Well I checked the ACER manuals online and their are switches on the MB to disable passwords..

But hey I’m lacking in experience so what do I know..

        • #2638868

          Strange! – I’m typing this on an Acer Aspire 1363WLMi . . .

          by older mycroft ·

          In reply to Check

And I know for a fact, that the BIOS password is stored on an EEPROM – so use of any jumpers would be an utter waste of time.

Did you perhaps, have difficulty breathing, after blowing all that dust off those online manuals??? 😀

          In reply to Check

I got to learn something new!

It is not at all surprising that some level of password reset exists and is held closely to the vest. We’re getting to the point where everything is secured so well that the user can’t use the system!

          Thanks for looking it up!

Do they mention a drivelock PW?

          by the scummy one ·

          In reply to Check

as this is what this thread is about!

A drivelock PW is set on the HDD, and cannot be disabled by jumpers on the MB.

A drivelock PW may or may not be crackable with special expensive equipment. Some of them will self destruct the HDD if attempted to crack it.

      Unethical Fix but it works

In reply to Hard disk Password breaking

Use a long flat board and lay your friend down on it. Bind his/her hands and feet. Blindfold, and wrap a rag around their face with part of the rag in the mouth cavity. Apply water until they are near unconsciousness, repeat until they remember the password.

P.S. There is a strong debate as to this being classified as torture, so use wisely and be quiet about it.

P.P.S. You never heard this from me.

for all the show and pretending to be outraged, it turns out top Dems were briefs on this procedure back in 2002 and never said a peep. Makes you wonder, huh?

So no it doesn’t make me wonder.
The military condemned the action as torture since the Spanish American War.
At least one Democrat wrote a Confidential letter to the CIA condeming the tactic. And this is no longer a part of CIA approved interrogation techniques.

This is a Drivelock PW Crack

      by the scummy one ·

In reply to Hard disk Password breaking

This is provided for information only and SHOULD NEVER be used for any reason.

This is HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL information that the HDD manufacturers DONT want you to know. I am risking it all providing this to you.

The problem with these new HDD designs is with the drivelock PWD’s. If you try to crack it, and are unsuccessful, then the drive will self destruct (scratching the heads against the platters destroying all information and the HDD itself).

These are tough to get by. I have used equipment meant to bypass these, that cost mucho $$$$$$$$, and still not work on certain model HDD’s.

After extensive research into this problem I have found a solution (and bribing several key employees at HDD development sites).

There is a chip controlling the Drivelock PWD’s inside of the HDD. This chip needs to be disabled. But if it is just removed, the HDD will not work because the controller board needs to know it is there by the extra power sent through from it.

So, to do this properly, you will need
A screwdriver set (small torx, philips, and flat head)
      a small hammer
      a long grounding wire
      power (wall outlet).
      pliers (small)

First (and remember this is for information only), pull the HDD out of the system.
Put it on a table, and take it apart. There are screws under stickers on the top. You may need pliers as well depending on the model.

Take apart the HDD completely, including platters. Take the bottom platter and use a flathead screwdriver and scratch the inner-most part of the ring. just 1/8 inch worth needs scratching. You can do it in 2 or 3 places around the ring, but cannot exceed 1/8 inch or you may damage the HDD.

There should be a very small plastic piece near the drive motor. Either crack it, or remove it (it is easier to crack with the hammer and screwdriver).
Re-assemble the HDD. Before putting the case back together you need to make sure that no dust (or very little) is present. So get a can of air and spray the platters really good. If you touched the platters while removing or re-assembling them, get a q-tip and some WD-40. Spray the platters, and then ‘even out’ the oil with the q-tip. You need an even surface for the HDD to work properly.

      Finish assembling the HDD.
Place the HDD back into the system. Now, I mentioned extra power previously. Get out the grounding wire and cut it into 2 pieces.
On the first piece, connect it to the red power line going into the HDD. Either one.
Now, tie the other end to the main (red) power line from the power supply into the motherboard. This should provide the extra voltage needed.
Now the second grounding wire, tie it around your ankle (snug, not loose). Tie it to a good ground. Now, the first wire is likely to be loose a bit. You dont want anything to get fried, so tighten up the wire. Wrap it around your finger a few times until it no longer will touch anything.
Plug in the system, and hold the power button until the system boots up.
It should now bypass the PW protect all together.

Geeze, you guys have such a great ability to document ALL of the steps necessary for some of these procedures! I wish I had your technical writing skills! Although, you forgot to mention how to put the system back together again without the ground wires! :p 😉
