hard disk refuses to complete Scandisk .

By james ·
My hard disk will not complete the scandisk test when it is selected from accessories/system tools. It seems to take forever to load new programs and ofter fails to load them. The drive seems to be repeatedly searching for something or repeatedly trying to write something. In other cases it will work ok. It may run existing programs ok.

Have you attempted to run scandisk at the DOS. You will have to shut down to DOS (not a DOS window) then type scandisk c:. If you get a bad command or filename type c:\windows\command\scandisk c:.

It sounds like you have a bad sector or sectors on the hard drive. Running scandisk in the thorough mode may fix it depending on the severity. The program loading problem is likely caused by the attempt to read from the bad area of the drive. Good Luck!

Thankyou.
Your answer was exactly right. I was able to run scandisk in dos and isolate my bad clusters. I appreciate you help.

Run the antivirus software to see if you have a virus.

The problem was that I had a background program running and I was unable to complete scandis in windows.I was able to sort it out by returning to dos and running it there. I has some bad clusters and was able to isolate them. I appreciate your willingness to help. Thankyou. James MacLochlainn.

This is merely a comment and some additional things to investigate.

If you know the brand of the HD, it may be worth your time to download that manufacturer's firmware diagnostic program, as it is possible that your HD have developed an intermittent read error which is "fixed" when the HD retries the read. What you describe COULD be a sign of imminent HD failure. The only way to be sure is to run the firmware diagnostic.

You were quite correct. It turns out that the hard disk suffered some bad clusters and was repeatedly trying to read or write. I was able to isolate the clusters using scandisk using the dos mode so that my background programs were not activated. Iappreciate your help in this matter.

Did your scandisk keep on repeating itslef or did it hang? If this is the case make sure you do not have any program running in the background and make sure system tray is empty.

Yes. I had a program running in the background that I did not know about. I ran scandisk in the dos mode and was able to isolate my damaged clusters and now I have a useable hard disk again.
Thank you.

Hi,

You didn't say what os you are using , if win95 at boot press f5 to boot in safe mode and then do the scandisk. With win 98 go to start/run type msconfig and then press ok , uncheck everything that loads at the startup ( remember what is checked) reboot and do the scandisk. After the scan is done run msconfig again put back the checks and reboot.

Hope this helps.

In this particular problem your answer was not applicable. I must admit that your answer was very useful in other problems I had. I appreciate your contribution. It solved a few other problems that I had.
Thankyou.
