hard drive addition

By warrenL ·
Using HP Pavilion 6630,10G,500 processor andWin98SE

I am out of space and plan to add or replace the hard with a 40G Samsung 7200 hard drive. If I replace it I will copy old info to new hard drive.

Like to hear any ideas on the best way to add the additional space I need.

I have found that with the few Pavillions that I have worked with, that they do not like HDD's larger than what it came with from HP. You may need to run the HDD utility that comes with the drive.
Other than that, copying the data should be no problem if you want to have 2 HDD's. Keep the first for the OS and the second for data.
If you are looking to replace the drive altogether, then you will need a utility to transfer the OS onto the new drive. I prefer Ghost myself.

If you want to add new HDD if you have already a 40 GB HDD it is OK. You can add the similar capcity HDD to the HP Pavalliaon

Thanks for the suggestions.

I was able to get the info needed from HP. They said I could add up to 80G with no heating problem, and included a step by step procedure to install an additional hard drive. They also said the Samsung I want to install will be OK

Keep your fingers crossed while I go out on a limb and attempt to do this. I may be back for a rescue procedure.

Adding another identical hard drive is always the most fool proof.
Copying drives, etc. creates a lot more possibilities for things to go wrong, sometime disastrously wrong.
Add the second hard drive. The PC can handle it, and it is the simplest and best solution.

Chris,

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have been able to get a Samsung 40G 7200 RPM (SP0411N) hard drive for $58.00 and I can have it installed for $30 as an additional HD. I think for that price I will let someone else do the work.

best regards,
