Interesting question. I was wondering if you could give me some more info about the type of HD you are using & in what enviroment. I've seen this problem before w/ SCSI drives & people not terminating them correctly.

It could be a virus. The first thing I would do is go to www.westerndigital.com/support/
and download the diagnostic utility. The next time (or now if you have one) would be to boot to this disk and check out the hard drive. This utility will tell you if the hard drive is bad. If the HD is still good then I would assume you have a virus on the network. Be careful with this utility, there is one test that will wipe out the information on the hard drive. But, it will either re-certify the hard drive (it's good) or tell you it's bad. If it is bad you should be able to return them. most come with 3 yr warranty now.

Well, if it is a virus, it's on a computer. Update the DAT files for the anti-virus and scan all files. Hopefully you are only running one version of the anti-virus on the network and if you have the capability you could push the update to every computer on the net. Otherwise I guess you or someone else should visit each computer on the net. You could put the update on the server but, what are the chances that every single user on the net will do the update and do a complete scan?

Take alook at the installation of the drive itself too. With the cover off and the machine upright, (oriented as operating), look to see if the case is up, the drive electronics are up, or the drive is mounted on it's side. Drive Electronics up willeventually fail as the drive gets full, bedause it is mounted upside-down.

All very good suggestions. Also, check your environment, especially POWER. Have your electrician put in a monitor to make sure that the voltage and frequency are within tolerances. Also check to make sure your PC's power supplies are toggled to the correct setting (typically 120VAC/60Hz or 230VAC/50Hz).

Hmm, as I mention the PSU in the PC, also make sure that the PSUs are up to spec. Depending on where these systems come from, the builder may have scimped on the PSU. Most modern PCs need at least 250W. Much more if you're running lots of fans, CD/DVD type drives, more than one or two HDs and/or a FDD and ZIP/Tape.
