Hard Drive Defragment freezes computer

by vinagra . Updated 24 years, 8 months ago

A couple of days ago, I noticed my computer took longer than normal to boot up and then cable modem taking longer than normal time to download/upload. But it was sporadic, it worked well overall. So I didn’t care. last night, I was turning the computer off, and I got some general error type message. I hit Esc, and the computer shut down fine. I turned it back on and ran antivirus. I started Defrag but about five minutes into it, shut it off because it was too late at night. I shut off the computer, and got the same error message. THis morning, I turned the computer on and started Defrag of hard drives. The screen froze on me for 10 minutes. I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and it gave me a “Not responding, wait” message. I waited for anotehr few minutes, with just the hourglass on teh screen, so I turned the power off, waited a few minutes and turned it back on. I ran a complete antivirus with innoculation of program files, and hten tried to Defrag again. Same thing as last time, it gave me a Wait message, and I had to turn the power off…
no clue where to start…take off old NAV and install 2002? any files/drivers I can check for corruption?

please email at vinagra@hotmail.com if any suggestions.
Thanks,

V.
