Hard Drive Defragment freezes computer

By vinagra ·
A couple of days ago, I noticed my computer took longer than normal to boot up and then cable modem taking longer than normal time to download/upload. But it was sporadic, it worked well overall. So I didn't care. last night, I was turning the computer off, and I got some general error type message. I hit Esc, and the computer shut down fine. I turned it back on and ran antivirus. I started Defrag but about five minutes into it, shut it off because it was too late at night. I shut off the computer, and got the same error message. THis morning, I turned the computer on and started Defrag of hard drives. The screen froze on me for 10 minutes. I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and it gave me a "Not responding, wait" message. I waited for anotehr few minutes, with just the hourglass on teh screen, so I turned the power off, waited a few minutes and turned it back on. I ran a complete antivirus with innoculation of program files, and hten tried to Defrag again. Same thing as last time, it gave me a Wait message, and I had to turn the power off...
no clue where to start...take off old NAV and install 2002? any files/drivers I can check for corruption?

please email at vinagra@hotmail.com if any suggestions.
Thanks,

V.

Separately, and before doing the dfrag, check the drive for errors. The "power off" could have, and probably did, occur as the file system was being updated, leaving incomplete, corupted entries that let the drive be read. So, before "giving up" and getting a new drive, try to do "CHKDSK /F"

disable norton anti-virus temporarily and run a scandisk. Once that has finished then run a defrag. Anything running in background will cause the defrag to loop and start over several times -- sometimes it's easier to boot into safe mode and runthe defrag from there.

How large is your hard disk drive? defragmentation can take a long while if there hdd is large and it has not been regularly done. Run a scandisk first though.

What OS are you running? You will want to diable any unwanted programs and services that are running in the background before attempting to run a defrag.

I disabled all programs, ran thorough Scandisk, no errors reported. Then ran Defrag, no problems. I tried to shut down the computer and it again gave me the same message, this time i wrote most of it:
"
Windows: Federal Exception has occured at 0028C0028C6 in BFDBMM[01]00018C6

Current application will be terminated
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart, all data will be lost
"
what do you make of this?
Is this a virus/trojan effect?

i have some very sensitive data on my hard drive, and i don't want to lose it. I am even afraid ot turn the computer on now!

Try booting into safe mode and then run defrag. If defrag is run in normal mode a lot of times any programs running in the background affect the functionality of defrag.

I think the problem may be due to the hardisk problem.... try to boot the PC and enter the safe mode... scan your disk first and try the defrag it... if still got a problem your PC might be infected by Virus.. please get the latest virus pattern foryour antivrus software and scan for the virus.....
