Hard Drive Installation!!(I know,it soun

By gburs3 ·
I went to replace a hard drive in a Packard Bell Legend 1824CDT after partioning it, it won't boot from a floppy. It booted the first time, checked the CMOS it's set right, checked all connections. If you put the HD in another machine take out the partitions it will boot again but after setting partitions it hangs right after the floppy lights-light stays on it just sits there. Any help would be great.

That sounds like your cable is not properly placed on either the board or the floppy itself. IF the light stays on its because your cable is not correctly put in. Try reverseing the cable conncetion, this should fix your issue.

You check your jumper settings? Since it is the only drive in the PB it should be set accordingly.

Check the CMOS and make sure that the HD is configured properly (HEADS, SECTORS,WPCOMP, LZ...). Make sure that the boot sequence is set to A:, C: .Where A: is the floppy drive and C: is the hard drive.

Make sure that the 3.5" floppy is set to the a: within the cmos.

This is not an answer but a query.

What is the Type and size of the HD you are trying to install.

There have been several problems with Western Digital 6Gb and Fujitsu General 6.4Gb HDs over the last 6 months or so.

Just off the top of my head it sound as thoygh the partition is not active. This would cause an HDD (80) error and cause the machine to lock up. But the floppy light staying on is a small worry. Of all the drives I have installed over the last 12 months only three have failin the manor you have discribed. One Fujitsu and 2 Western Digitals, all three have a fault in 0 sector of the disk.

If you do have a second machine handy, try setting up the partition on the second machine. Set the primary partition to active and install DOS as a trial. Should it not work when you reinstall on the Packard Bell, check out the HD repair utilities the manufacturer has online.

I am very interested in the results of the test, so could you email me at strider@paradise.net.nz.

As with the query above I have had problems similar to this. The Western Digital drive on some systems needs to use the alternate jumper configuration which is jumping pins 4-6 for a single drive for the 6 pin drive. Check the spec sheet if this is an option on yours at

http://www.wdc.com/service/FAQ/jumpers.html

The other drive that I have come across is the Maxtors which has a small section in the guides about "System hangs on boot" which needs a jumper for a "Cylinder Limiter" at JP46 and then setup with MaxBlast.

If you have another type of drive, scan the documentation carefully and check their web site for drive BIOS updates.

I went over and over the jumpers they are right. I had already checked for Bios updates, seems there aren't any and Packard
Bell won't be send any more out either. Project is dead in the water. Going to replace old hard drive and forget it.
