Hard drive noise on startup

By Fitlady59 ·
Upon doing a cold bootup of my HP Pavilion 6530, my hard drive "groans" and sounds kind of sickly. It is closing in on 3 years old; do you think my hard drive is on its last legs? Someone suggested that perhaps the screws holding the hard drive in have loosened, but I rather doubt this. Once the computer has booted up, the groaning stops. I have had A+ training, and was told that this kind of noise usually indicates a hard drive going bad. No other symptoms at this point. Thank you!

Any weird noise out of a hard drive should be taken as an indication that indeed it's going bad. The age of hard drive doesn't necessarily indicate it's time for a new one. I have some very old 540 MB hard drives from back in the days of DOS and Windows 3.1 that still run fine.

If you have information on the drive you do not wish to lose, back it up. Then for peace of mind, get a new drive.

Run a scandisk on the drive and see if it locates any problems.

If the sound only comes at boot, then a ball bearing or two may be coming flat and one the drive gets to spin up speed, it's okay then.

If a scandisk indicates problems, then replace the drive. If there are no problems reported and you cannot spare the funding, then do a complete backup and start saving. Keep an eye on the drive, and if other problems start occurring (unexplained hanging within an app) then replace it then.

It could be starting to go bad, but it could also be nothing. If there is no other evidence of trouble, then I'd back it up and continue to use it until it fails completely.

Often fan noises are thought to HD noises, I use a stick or screwdriver against my ear to isolate the noise. If the HD is the source then replace before it fails.
