Hard Drive not recognized in external USB Enclosure - asked to format

By pbostian ·
Computer crashed. Want to move data to new machine. New machine has SATA drive, no provision for IDE drive. Used an OKGear external USB enclosure. Drive shows as needing to be formatted. However, can access as an internal drive in another machine and examine files, etc.

Jumpered as master in OK Gear enclosure. Any ideas?

Bad enclosure?

by sgt_shultz In reply to Hard Drive not recognized ...

I would call OKGear or email them:
If the drive doesn't show up in Disk Management, sounds like something is wrong with it. What os anyhow?
Any technical support please call 909-869-07** or email support@okgear.com

Yes the OS is important

If it's Vista instead of formatting the drive you need to add it to the system and make sure that Vista's Security is set to allow it as Safe.

Though if you have been using a Password or Windows File Encryption on an XP Pro Computer you may have a lot of trouble getting your protected/encrypted data into a readable format that is of any use to you.
