Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management

I can't speak for Vista (never used it) but take a look under;

Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management and check that an available drive letter is assigned.

I'm assuming that you are attempting to use Windows XP or older

Which Do Not Have Native Support for SATA Drives.

What you need to do is push the F6 as soon as the very first Blue Screen Appears in the Install Setup and install the SATA Drivers for your M'Board, NB. You need access to a Floppy drive as this is required to install the SATA Divers which need to be copied to the Root of the Floppy.

If you can not use a Floppy you can make your own slipstreamed Install CD by following the directions here

Whilke I've never tried this it should solve your problem.
