Hard Drive re-reads after upgrade

I just upgraded to XP Pro from Win98SE. Everything appeared to upgrade OK. No errors. Now the hard drive continually reads in a cyclic matter. Every 2-3 seconds it tries to re-read the hard drive. I get no errors and I’ve run ScanDisk numerous times with no errors. Any ideas? Thanks.
