Hard Drive re-reads after upgrade

By tturner33 ·
I just upgraded to XP Pro from Win98SE. Everything appeared to upgrade OK. No errors. Now the hard drive continually reads in a cyclic matter. Every 2-3 seconds it tries to re-read the hard drive. I get no errors and I've run ScanDisk numerous times with no errors. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hard Drive re-reads after upgrade

It could be Disk Indexing (for fast file searches):

Start --> Programs --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management
Storage --> Disk Management

It could be a program like Norton Ghost (that backs-up files in the background).

It could be many things. I'd suggest ending programs, one-by-one, until it stops. Then tell us which one did it.

Hard Drive re-reads after upgrade

It wasn't disk indexing that was causing the re-reads. It was the evaluation copy of ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall Ver 1.0.xxx. I stopped the process and the disk reads stopped. I then uninstalled, downloaded the latest version and problem was solved. Thanks for the help!
