Hard Drive Showing as F: Drive

By No_Dependencies ·
Hello Everyone,
Not sure if this falls under hardware or software but here goes. I have XP loaded on my computer 40gb HDD, 512mb Ram, AMD 1.8 processor. When I installed XP the Bios reads the HDD as the C:drive but in XP it reads the HDD as F:drive. The HDD cable has a Zip disk attatched to it. I have checked twice to ensure that the HDD is set to Master and my friend has double checked me as well. When I originally installed XP I loaded Partition Magic and attempted to change the HDD to the C: but would not allow it.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem?? Also, if this problem is fixable can I change the drive letter to C: without an OS failure?? I may re-image the HDD anyway but I would like to know why this is happening so I may prevent it from happening again.

Try going to the control panel and goto Administrative Tools,Computer Management. Under storage is Disk Management. In Disk Management right click on the drive for your options. You can change the drive letter there.

Thanks for the effort. I tried that and received message: windows cannot modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume.

Any other possible ideas??

I have changed the boot drive assignment using partition magic before but it caused the system to crash. My suggestion is to back up date on the drive then use a dos boot disk with fdisk on it and make sure all partitions are wiped out, then try again. I actually have a similar problem on mys system because I put two disks in it that I didn't fdisk and both were primary drives previously and Windows XP put the drive I installed the OS to at the end of the drive list. It doesn't hurt anything though so I have left it that way.

You usually cannot successfully change the drive designation of the boot/system drive, no matter what software you use.

I have also run into this same situation with Zip drives. I have had it happen when the Zip drive was a slave on the primary IDE channel and when it was a master on the secondary IDE channel.

The way I got around the problem was to physically disconnect the Zip drive, install XP, and then reconnect the Zip drive. Nothing else I tried would work. Never could figure outwhy.

that is a good idea. it has been driving me crazy trying to figure out why the bios would read it correctly but not the OS. I will make sure to add the zip after fresh install-Thanks...
