Hard Drive to Motherboard Compatibility

By sprikadee ·
Can a Motherboard with UDMA/66 port support an ATA/100 Hard Drive? Specifically, I want to install a 80 gig ATA/100 hard drive and my board is an ASUS CUSI-FX, socket 370.

YES.

All ATAs are backward compatible. In your case, your ATA 100 HD will be as if it were ATA66.

I am not sure whether the motherboard (MB) will accommodate an 80GB HD.
There are three scenarios.
1. The MB takes whole 80GB.
2. The MB recognizes the HD but takes only a portion of it.
3. The MB does not recognizes the HD and the system hangs at POST.

For scenario 2 and 3, a BIOS flash might resolve the problem but ASUS website provides no information.

If the BIOS flash does not work, you may consider installing an ATA100 IDE card. It will not have any problem of accepting an 80GB HD.

Your last option would be upgrading your system.
