Hard Drive tool needed

By jeremyhoughton ·
Hi there, my brother in law is having some problems. I can't be there to look at his system (am out of the state) so was wondering if anyone out there knows of some good, preferrably free tools to use to check a hard drive and other hardware to see if any is failing or about to.

Thanks!

Hi,
Hard drive manufacturers often have disk utilities available for download. Maxtor's Powermax software seems to work with a number of different brands.

Check the hard drive manufacturer it usually will have a software diagnostic tool that will check the drive.

There is other software that needs to be purchased

I have a tool that I use called GWSCAN. It used to come with the older Gateway 2000 PCs. It will scan any harddrive and fix certain Western Digital drives. This tool can also write zeroes to the drive if you want.
