Hard Drives Problems

By Darkchimaira ·
I have 2 hard drives 1 is a WD and the other is a seagate both seem to have the same problem and strangely enough both are from the same customer. If u plug them into a pc via sata the pc doesnt boot, but when u plug them in via usb external they show in disk management. There they show as uninitialized, and u receive an error when u try to initialize it. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Well what do the Makers Testing Utilities tell you about these Drives?

by OH Smeg In reply to Hard Drives Problems

Seagate Tool is Seatools and is available here

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=SeaTools&vgnextoid=720bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

Make sure to get the Seatools for DOS copy

And Wester en Digital has Data Lifeguard here

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=601&sid=30&lang=en

Again you want the DOS one.

Make the 2 CD's and then test one drive at a time. If it fails the first test plug into a different computer and test again. If it still fails the test the Drive is dead and gone to Silicon Heaven but if it passes the second test the Data Lead, Power Supply or M'Board in the first computer is damaged and need repairing.

Cant get into Dos

I cant use dos coz the pc wont boot if the hard drives are connected at startup. Can only connect drives in windows.

Well you could try the Windows Versions of the Utilities

by OH Smeg In reply to Cant get into Dos

But I'm not sure how well that they work that way.

If you are unable to boot to the POST with the HDD attached it really sounds like a lack of Power to start off with.

That Drive is Toast and in Silicon Heaven

If it's still Under Guaranteer RMA it to the Country Distributer for replacement or the retailer where it was purchased.

It seems that you have to try low level format now, there must be hardware problem.

Try Linux setup

by oldbaritone In reply to low level format

Don't install Linux, if you don't want, but try using a Linux boot/install CD and see what (if anything) comes up as the partitions.

Maybe some third-party software (such as whole-disk encryption) has been installed on the drive by the customer. Particularly since two drives from the same customer have the same issue, you need to find out what's going on.

And if (heaven forbid) it's a virus (like a rootkit) causing the problem, it's less likely to spread when you're booted in Linux. ALWAYS BE CAREFUL when plugging a "dead" drive into a good system - it can be a disaster - you could infect your own computer with the same problem the customer has.

Thanks

I will try the linux disk. It doesnt seem like i will get another solution.
