Harddisk conflick

By cute_d ·
I have 1 harddisk partition into half. Now I can see c: and ,and my cd-rom will be E: ,the problem is when i put another harddisk with also half partitioned, it should be E: and F: and cd-rom G: ,but it turn out to be and F: , and the first hardddisk become C: and E: , so all the program corrupted or can't be found because of the drive letter. I have tried to change the letter assignment from the device manager but can't be done. Can't some one please help...

The default drive letter assignments for DOS are:

Primary master drive:
Primary DOS partition C:

Primary Slave drive:
Primary DOS partition

Primary master drive;
logical drive 1 E:
logical drive 2 F:

Primary slave drive;
logical drive 1 G:
logical drive 2 H:

CD drives follow in succession.

In Windows XP, when you add new drives, the drives actually receive the next drive letter as you wish.

There are 2 work-arounds for your situation:

1. When you partition the slave (second) drive, make the entire drive an extended DOS partition.
This way, all logical drives will follow in sequence after the last logical drive on the master drive.

2. Download and use the utility Letter Assigner

This is normal. If you are using NT/W2K/XP goto Disk manager and reassign drive letters.
