By rich2b ·
I have a problem with my harddisk when I try to partition it the message appearing was "Unable to access Drive 1". But there is a existing C drive 2.5 GB that can be formatted, the problem are it keep hanging-out everytime I install a software program.
Is there anyway this harddisk can be fix. Its
a Maxtor 10GB harddisk.

Harddisk Partition Problem!!

Richbisco, Question; have you installed any new ram on this pc? and have you tried this HD on another pc as a slave or master to see if it is accessible at all? Try and establish if the Hard Drive is the problem, or maybe some other piece of hardware on the MB? Hope this helps.....

What OS are you trying to use? The way I understand your problem, is that you have 2 drives, is this correct? If it is the same drive, it sounds like you need to do a complete reformat of the drive. Deleting any existing partitions and recreatingit should take care of your problem on one drive.

If you have 2 drives, are both of them showing up in the BIOS? If you run fdisk from a Win9x startup disk, how many disks does the computer find? If the system finds more than one, on the mainFdisk screen, you should see option "5-View Different drives" or words to that effect. Your existing C may be on the second disk and it is set to be the slave drive instead of master drive.

If the C is a slave instead of a master, changing the jumper pins on both drives to correspond with where the C drive should take care of your problem. At least this should give you a starting point. Hope it helps! Roger

I'm using Win98. Yes I have partition it to 2 drive. I have already use it almost 1 year. And the problem arise I already formatted it many times. And I already tried to repartition it to make it into one drive. The problem is that I could not partition it into one drive or repartition it. It keep appearing the unable to access drive 1 everytime I try to partition it. I could see the 5 Different word & beneath it keep appearing the Unable to access the Drive 1. But the thing is there is a driveC that I can format almost 2.5g instead of 10.2g. It hang everytime I used it.

Win 95 only see's 2 gigs, NT only see's 4 gig. Use win 98, be sure you to use the yes for do you want to use large disk support. And format with the /u command for each partition. Check the main board web site to be sure your motherboard will support large hard drives. Or use a drive manager.

I'm already using Win98. And I already use a drive manager. It doesn't work it keep appaering the Unable to access the Drive 1. My motherboard is an Asustek that support a large hard drive. I have already formatted it many time the thing is I can only use 1 drive C(2.5g) instead of 2 drive C & /(2.5g & 7.7g). Bec. its a 10.2g hard disk. And keep hanging out.

Hi
Try the following:
Check each entry in your CMOS setup to make sure the correct drive parameters are entered.
Make sure the signal cable between the drive and the controller is inserted properly. Make sure that your copy of FDISK is compatible (i.e. came with) your present operating system.
Run Scandisk to check the drive for errors. If you have an emergency drive utility you should use it to check or replace track 00 on the drive.

Hope this is useful
