harddrive capacity & BIOS

By modijayesh01 ·
hi,

Sometimes we get motherboard which does not support more than 8 GB. And we have to use only upto 8 GB, remaining capacity is wasted. Is there any utility available that will recognize more capacity & we can use entire hard disk.

Also it becomes very difficuilt to find BIOS update from manufacturer. (Reply using this limitation)

Thanks in advance for all reply.

Hi,

Here is one for Seagate Drives...

(remove spaces from the following URLs)

...and IBM's Solution...

...and another one also suggesting IBM's software will be good for other systems...

Sometimes the drive manufacturer's provide a diskette and usually you can get all of the drive to work if you use their diskette. Unless you are talking 486, or pentium class machines. But anything above PII, should recognize the entire hdd withthe provided floppy.

Drive limitations can be overcome by installing a third-party controller card.

The options along your your lines would be using a drive overlay software that is sent along with certain hard drives from the manufacturers, other overlay software to be considered is
Data Lifeguard Tools or MaxBlast

As Tim and Anna said, there are several utilities availble.

Most of the ones that you get from the drive manufacture are limited to only work with that brand of drive.

I heartily recommend using a seperate PCI IDE card.
Most systems that havedrive size limited to 8GB also have at best ATA 33 data transfer rates.
You can get the added benefit of the higher transfer speed of newer drives, along with being able to use the full drive capacity with a new IDE card.

At $30 - $50, it may bethe one of the most cost effective upgrades, as it can tripple or even quadruple (ATA133) the data transfer rate.
One manufacture is Promise technology.
Now that they are shifting over to ATA133 cards, many on-line stores are selling there ATA100cards for bargain prices.
