HardDrive Not Detected or Don't Power On

By skullkrusher250 ·
My hard drive won't turn on when I put in Both the Power Cord & the IDE Cable into my hard drive. But if I take out the IDE Cable & leave the power cord in, then the hard drive turns on. What can I do to make the hard drive turn on with both the IDE Cable & the Power Cord in it.

that is weird. you sure you have the ide cable installed not backwards either end?
i would just try first to get the drive working. like take a known good ide cable and put the hd jumpered as sole drive on the secondary ide channel. if doesn't work then, i say bad drive...
you aren't putting ide cable on and off with power on are you? (rdl)

Assuming that:

1. IDE cable is good (you have changed it out haven't you?)

2. IDE cable is connected correctly. Use a keyed cable, if possible, to prevent problems.

Then, you may have a failed drive electronics card on hard drive that is shorting drive when IDE cable is connected. If that's the case, drive is inoperable.

Don't always assume it is the drive that is bad. Test the ide port itself too. Make sure that channel isnt dead. Try it on the secondary if on primary channel or vice versa, unless you are already using both channels successfully. Otherwise i agree with the previous replies make sure cable is on proper.
