Hardware configuration : Win95/98

By Andy Bridges ·
I have a laptop/docking station setup running Win98 logging onto a NT4 domain which works fine in situ.(During connection a logon script is run from the server that auto updates anti-virus software and maps drives for ERP databases). How do I stop the machine looking for domain validation when its used out of the docking station in a remote situation. Hitting "esc" at the logon just gives an error of "could not validate user name/password on the domain". Someone please help, this is driving me crazy!!!

If you have a roaming profile, which it sounds like you do, you need to also set use cached profile on slow connections. This is under the system applet, user profile tab, and change type.

Once this is setup, the person would log on like he was connected to the network, he;ll get a couple of mesages about profiles and network, but these are just ok'd through.

I'm not certain this would work and I don't have a docking laptop to test it, but could you set up a hardware profile for undocked use that doesn't include the network adapter?
Without the adapters, the protocols wouldn't load and without them, it would seem to me that you wouldn't get trapped in the demand to authenticate against the domain.

You could select cancel at the domain logon. You could right click the network neighborhood icon goto properties and select windows logon as opposed to microsoft networks, right before you shutdown at the docking station.
