Hardware diagnostics tool

Hi,

I’ve noticed lately that most dell computers come with a hardware diagnostics utility saved on the dell system partition (accessed by pressing f12 while booting). It helped lately to diagnose a bad memory chip. I was wondering if a similar third party utility exists to troubleshoot hardware on other than dell computers(must load from cd).
