Hardware failure error for modem

By sharon.lambert ·
I have a computer that keeps giving me a hardware failure error when I try to set up my Internet connection. I have changed the modem card and the PCI slot it was plugged into, but I still get this error. Everything else on the computer is working.

Have you run the modem diagnostics and if so what does that tell you. To run the diagnostics go to the control panel and choose modems. Click on the diagnostics tab. Select your modem and choose More Info button. If you don't get any error then at least you know that the modem is communicating with the operating system. If you do get an error the modem might still be alright. Note the com port. If is com1 or com2 then it could be conflicting with the bios settings for the port (the bios settings might have it disabled). Some pci modems will add a com4 or 5 port for the modem. Make sure that the modem is pointing to the correct port and that there are no conflicts.

Also check and make sure that your internet connection is pointing to thecorrect modem. Sometimes when you replace a modem the old modem information is still in the registry. If this happens you will get an error because the connection will still be looking for the old modem. If you check the properties and it is still looking at the old modem you should get a message stating that the old modem is not available and you can switch it to look at the new modem.

If all else fails, I would remove the modem from the device manager. Power down the computer and remove the card. Power the computer back up to make sure the device is removed. Then power down the computer, put the modem back in and let the computer find the device. Follow the directions for your modem for installing the mode making sure that it is not conflicting with existing hardware.

Hope this helps,

DrBob

I have done all of these things, and it still doesn't work. I am also getting an error message concerning the Random Access Software for the Internet Service Provider is not working. I use ATT and I have other machines that are working correctly. Could there be a problem with the motherboard? I think this system got hit by lightning. Everything else works on the system; just not the modem.
