What is the best way to perform a hardware migration on a Netware 4.11 server? Is the DSmaint process the best?? Time is of the essence!

Get an up to date backup of the file system and NDS. Down the server. Setup netware on the new server with the same tree and server name. Restore NDS to the new server from the backup and then restore the file system from the backup.

The problem with this solution is that the volumes are a total of 170 Gb of data. The restore would take about 3 days. The custoomer cannot afford to be down that long!

Hello !

DSMAINT is a good way to move NDS informations from one server to a new server. After restoring DSmaint then restore your data. Before starting make a backup of the trustees on the "old" server with TBACKUP ( support.novell.com )just i case.

Another way to change hardware is to use Servermagic. With Servermagic you can copy all information from the "old" server ( incl NDS informations ) on partition level to your new server.
I think it will be the fastest way to move hardware. ServerMagic is a very strong tool. Check it out.

Hello Again

fui !

I've just moved 15-20 GB an hour with servermagic.

It a very strong program, so if time is an issue then this is the best way to move hardware platform.

Not sure if it is the best, but the only available.

Preconditions.
1.- 1 backupset each 50GB of data
2.- Sincronization status OK. Also check volumes afer backup
3.- 3.5" floppy
4.- New hardware working SAME SP level and name_space!!(in another network without DS installed). Also make and mount the new volumes (with the SAME NAME, different sized, etc, etc)
5.- Have two client LOGGED IN to old sever and perform Prepare server for HD upgrade.
6.- Copy files from sys: to dkt and unplugit from the network)
7.- Restore files to new_server.
8.- Issue "SET DSTRACE = *." and double Check sincronization...
9.- Wait a few minutes after all replica rings became update in every server.

Actually this is close to what we did! Used a Windows 2k workstation with 2 1000gb nics. Attached the 2 servers to it and used the 2k workstation as a proxy. Xcopy copied about 8 gB PER hour.
