    Hardware/Network Settings Profiles?

    Locked

    by matt.wong ·

I have a Win98 notebook that will connect to my company network through NT 4.0 Server using DHCP. It will also be used to connect to the server through RAS when out of the office. And I’ll also be using it to connect to my home network through NT 4.0 Server using static addressing. Any suggestions on what would be the easiest way to configure my notebook for all 3 of these connections? I’ve tried setting up separate hardware profiles but Client For Microsoft settings (Log on to NT domain and workgroup settings) always remain the same for all profiles. Also, when I setup a profile for DHCP RAS, disabling the NIC, I don’t get the network login screen at startup, just the windows desktop login.
Any suggestions would be appreciate. Thanks.

Setup the NIC to receive IP info from a DHCP server. Configure NN with “Client for Microsoft Networks” as opposed to “Windows Logon”. This will set you up for use on the LAN with DHCP. When you are away from the office (using RAS), before bootingup your computer, take the NIC out of the laptop. When you boot up, the computer will not see the NIC and will not prompt you to login. When you establish a Dial-Up connection to RAS, the RAS server will prompt you for your username, domain, and password (or at least it should if it is configured correctly). As far as you home LAN goes, you will have to physically change the NN properties to reflect your LAN, then reboot. This is the only way to get it to work. You are right, NN stays the same for all profiles. Good luck.

Have you thought of using DHCP on your home network. You should be prompted for the domain when you boot up. Your dial-up connection is separate through the Dial-Up Adapter and should not conflict with your NIC settings. Just make sure nothing is setup under TCP/IP for your dial-up settings. Dial-up settings should be setup on the connection itself. The Dial_up Adapter DNS settings will show as the same the NIC DNS settings but this won’t effect your dial-up connection.
DHCP server is part NT 4.0 server. You may have to install it if it’s not already installed.

first of all have you ever done this before?
Are you using a docking station?

Make sure in every profile created, you remove the hardware your wont be using in that profile. regaurdless if it will or will not interfare with other profiles. make sure you remove and not disable..

I have a doccked networked profile and an undocked Modem profile. I removed the modem in the docked profile and removed the nic in the undocked profile..
