Hardware Wizard can't find modem driver

By shereerw ·
I have Windows Professional installed. Last weekend I downloaded Windows update. A new dial up connection appeared in "Dial Up" so I uninstalled it. Now everytime I turn on the computer I get a message that "New Hardware is found" but when I attempt to install the driver, I receive a message "insert Manufacturers disk" but I don't have one. The modem is a Motorola SM56 PCI Fax modem#15 V2.11.06D.5V MC 143450 RDK. Do I need to install this driver. My other dial up icon appears but is gray and not highlighted as it would normally look.

I would appreciate your help. I have so many problems with my computer because I live in a rural area and there is always something out of the ordinary happening with it. Although it seems that I should not have upgraded the windows update file.

I hope you can put me on the right track.

Thank you.

Hardware Wizard can't find modem driver

My experience has been that Win2K is better about updates not breaking working systems, but it can still happen. Typical advice is "download the latest driver" -- but without a modem, that's not possible.

If the modem was working before, it musthave had an appropriate driver for it. Did you machine come with any setup/recovery CD's? Careful examination of those may reveal the location of the modem driver.

If that doesn't work, perhaps a call to the computer manufacturer will help.

If all else fails, you may need to replace the modem just to get something that works. A word of asvice -- we have *lots* of rural areas here in the Adirondacks; almost without exception external modems work better in areas where connections are "iffy"
