Have you chosen the correct career?

by blitzer . Updated 25 years, 5 months ago

A few months ago, while in between contracts and facing the interview routines, I was asked this very interesting questions.

Q: If all jobs paid the same, what would be your career of choice.

This caught me by surprise, and I immediatelly answered, “I’d love to be a network designer working with high end complex hardware/software.”

Thinking that was a great answer, the interviewer then added, “I meant, a job in any industry.”

To my amazement, my answer came even faster “If alljobs in the world paid the same, I’d be a woodturner!” This shocked me, and from that day onwards, I’ve been contemplating my carrer decisions.

My question is, is IT your true calling, or would there be something else out there you would ratherbe doing for money?. Or is the money in IT such a drawing force that nothing else would sufice?

I have recently decided to plan and retire from IT for a year or so, and see if my other interest would pay the bills, as I know that job satisfaction will be there.
