HD Space missing when moving files and deleting XP User account

By toyotacity ·
Hi this is my first post so please bear with me

I had a user account in XP which was my own as an administrator, I set up a 2nd user account also administrator and for some files I cut and paste from one user account to the other, some I copied and pasted from one user to the other

I confirmed the files were all there, and I deleted some files from the first user account, and then I deleted it, choosing the option to delete files

Now in my new user account all my files are showing, but i've only got 33gb disk space, whereas I should have about 68gb

Before I started transferring the files between user accounts I did have 70gig free

can anyone tell me how to get my missing space back

thanks

Have you emptied your 'Recycle Bin' yet?

The files may still be occupying disk space in there.

If you copied and pasted you were duplicating the files.

After you deleted the first user, did you reboot?

Why did you not just Rename the user?

i'm 90% sure I did on the old account, but if I deleted surely it would have been deleted anyway

What about 'copying & pasting' though . . .

As I pointed out - that doubles your files, so cutting down on free space.

Yes true, I've copied and pasted some of the files, which would double the disk space for those particular files, but it still doesn't answer my question on how to get this disk space back if I've deleted the user account

I've run a disk recovery tool and software to locate missing hd space which hasn't come up with anything

Let's have some info . . .

by OldER Mycroft In reply to HD Space missing when mov ...

Make and model of computer?
Which flavour of XP?
Total size of harddrive?

Clearly the HD space has gone somewhere. What have you recently added, apart from the user id.

What software are you using to report your disk stats?

Have you right-clicked on your drive to see its properties?

The computer is self built, 4 years old, 120gb hard drive (reporting as 114gb)

768 ram, running windows XP Pro SP2, I've not added anything that needed installing, the only thing is a wireless router, but I had the disck space after that was added too, nothing else has been installed

i'm using windows to check the drive properties, i've right clicked and showing 114gb with 33.9gb free

I've used partition magic which shows the same, although i've not used it to partition the drive, i've also used PC Inspector file recovery and that shows the same drive and free space

I'm off sick with scarlet fever and thought i was losing my marbles, i've looked for lost and deleted files and nothing there either

deleted user files?

by ashij In reply to HD Space missing when mov ...

Hi! you said you have deleted the account, but just to be sure, have you deleted the user files (under C:\documents and settings\%username%) If you havent, delete the directory wit hthe old username -> empty recycle bin and then check the space

If you have then I guess I didn't understand the question properly.

If I go to C:\documents and settings\DK

nothing comes up except page cannot be displayed

i've tried C:\documents and settings\%DK%

DK was the old user account

Download Treesize and scan your haddrive with it. It'll show where everything is and what is occupying what.

If I use a different thread title won't it start a new one

I've used that program you recommended and it shows

41gb Documents and Settings
3gb Program Files
2gb windows

and 34gb free

which leaves 34gb missing which isn't being reported on that program
