HD unexplicably filling up

By aelroy ·
I posted this question here earlier and non of the suggestions solved the problem. Here is what is happening:

I am running a Win 2000 Server on my machine. For some reason the C drive keeps loosing chunks of memory rappidly (a few M in a few hours span) as if being filled. I am running out of space and options rappidly.

Here is what it is not:
1. Known Virus (ran Norton AntiVirus 2000 with latest virus definitions)
2. Log files (deleted all larger .log files from the drive and monitoredtheir changes. They do not explain the loss)
3. Disk Physical Fault (ran the disk check utility in win 2000)
4. Other files (I monitored changes by a search for files created or modified in the last 1 day. There were a number of large files but their size does not change from one search to the next. Non of the files can explain where the space goes to.)

Since my initial problem I was forced to re-install Win 2000 Server through the Upgrade function of the CD. This returned 160M to me but the problem persists.

sounds like you have a bad application that is eating up chunks of memory. Try running it with no apps, and then add them one by one until you find the offender.

Have a look at task manager and see if you detect the process which is responsible.

Even better use performance monitor LOG, so you can track the problem over time.

Since you cannot find files that are taking up the space, and since you re-installed (assuming a clean install) I can't help but think that the problem is with WIN2000 itself, on YOUR particular machine. For example I have a modem at that works fineat the office, but doesn't do jack on my home machine.

SP-1 is due out in June and fixes about 300 bugs, anyone of which could be causing WIN 2000 to mis-report the drive size.

You can download the "cleen Sweeper" From the
Internet. That is the perfact program for
things like that. And it is free. It lets you
clean up you HD from all this zero bit files
and the temp fils, Hlep fils you never read
and all the other stuff what is lieing around
ther.
Ciao

Don't know if it is the same problem but my machine was loosing up to 5gb of space.I found that Norton2000 was creating huge Tmp files.I dont know why.I did a search for *.tmp files and deleted them and recovered 5gb of space.
