hd won't spin with IDE attached

By drdran ·
Just in case anyone has this problem:
Intel P4 system with MSI mainboard - new case +PSU.
HD attached to mainboard correctly, power leads OK, but HD won't spin. IDE cable removed and drive spins. HD not recognised on BIOS. HD functional in another PC.
rest of system looked ok

Checked wiring carefully
Thought mainboard IDE controller failed
BUT eventually realised that DVD drive cable was attached incorrectly. When this was corrected both drives seen on BIOS and everything worked normally

Pin one configuration

by mjd420nova In reply to hd won't spin with IDE at ...

The IDE cable from the MOBO to any drive has to be orientated properly or this will occur. Pin one is the edge closest to the power connection, this is true for all drives, CD, DVD and hard drives of all types. This fault is common in a lot of new builds of semi-experienced builders and novices.

Bad cable Manufacture

by ozi Eagle In reply to Pin one configuration

Hi,

This is an issue that should never happen!

All IDE device connectors have pin (about 19) missing, the cable should have the corresponding socket blocked, then it would be impossible to incorrectly connect.
