I’m working on a Gateway Solo 1200 laptop, with an Intel Celeron (800 MHz), Win XP Pro, 128MB RAM, and a 20GB Toshiba HDD, and the factory original CD-ROM drive. Intermittently, the PC will boot and will not find the HDD nor the CD-ROM drive. Sometimes it does not find the HDD but finds the CD-ROM. Other times, it finds both. I’ve run checkdsk on the HDD, as well as at least 2 different HDD diagnostic tools (Gateway Scan and IBM’s DFT)… no errors were found. What might cause an intermittent problem like this?
