HDD dropped by BIOS

By KenLea1 ·
Having problems supporting system I built using EliteGroup K75SA m/b,AMD AthlonXP 2000+, GeForce2 MX400 64Mb, 256 DDR2100 and WD40Gb7200 HDD. Hard drive gets dropped by Bios, i.e. no Pri.Mater IDE on boot. Rectified once by reattaching cables, but reoccurence baffling. Will try replacing CMOS battery, but should be new.Any suggestions, or known problems with this mobo, gratefully received.

process of elimination. change out cables, if problem persists, move HDD to a known good system, if problem follows, its the HDD, if not, look to the mainboard.

Note: if the cmos battery is bad, you would get a checksum error during bootup requiring you to configure the BIOS. All BIOS settings will be default settings. I doubt that's your problem. More likely a bad cable, bad IDE controller on the hard drive or a bad HDD. Check for bent, broken or missing pins on the IDE controller slot on the mainboard or on the HDD.

Old broken pin (from earlier kit) lodged in ribbon cable - problem solved.
