Is the error message during BIOS start or after Windows takes over?

You could possible set CHS information manually in BIOS. (make a note of existing settings)You may find this info actually printed on the drive itself, failing that have a browse on manufacturers website or have a Google.

Some BIOSs detect multiple CHS settings, allowing you to try a different one in turn. You could try that as well.

If the failure is during OS boot, what is the message? IE "Sector not found" etc

Good Luck

If you need to get the data off it fast, then take the HDD out of your machine and install it as a secind hard drive in another machine (preferably with the same OS). Grab your data off it, then check the HDD for errors.

Good luck
