HDD FAT ERROR XP Uninstall Win98 Install

I have deleted a partition created with Win XP recreated it and tried to install win98 but am getting a FAT error in FAT 2 when checking for errors during initial install Win98. Am unable to get past thyis error (maxtor 20gig drive), can someone shed some light??
