Sounds like the drive went to the big bit bucket in heaven. Have you tried it on another machine? If it does the same thing and the data is important, take it to a data recovery warehouse. If the data was encrypted with some sort of protection, you may be SOL. Best bet is to contact the manufacturer of the hardware.

Safely Remove Option in Windows has not been used 1 too many times. The Partition Information on the Drive has been corrupted by incorrectly unmounting the drive.

The solution here if the Data is Important is to pack up the Drive and send it off to a Data Recovery House to have the drive recovered. It's the only real Guarantee of getting all your Data safely back. Because this is a Self Imposed Problem the chances are very high to recover it all provided you Don't Mess with it.

The more you mess with it the more it's going to cost to do the recovery and the less likely you are of a 100% Recovery if it is necessary.

But if the Data would only be Nice to get back you can try one of the many Data Recovery Applications available.

All you need do is run one of the Many Data Recovery Programs preferably one that Rebuilds the Partition Information.

Here is a short list of the better ones but it is by no means a complete list of all the available software.

While the last 2 are from the same company they are very different products. Win Hex should only be considered for use by someone who knows Hex Inside Out while Davory is a great cheap General Purpose Application.

Personally I prefer the On Track Option but it's anything but cheap. However because I use this type of software a lot it's paid for itself many times over by now, for a cheaper option Spin Rite from Gibson Research or Stella have both very good reputations by other TR members.

Forget looking in My Computer

by OH Smeg In reply to hdd toshiba 400gig runni ...

Look in Drive or Disc Management and see how this device appears there. I just forget the exact wording under Vista and I don't have a Vista unit here to look on.

It quite possibly is because the Safely Remove Option in Windows has not been used one too many times and the Partition tables have been corrupted but until you look at the actual Device in Disc and or Drive Management it's impossible to say what's going on here.

Can you try this in another computer to check it's function?
