headset/mic – altec lansing bx1120 speaker conflict

by evath . Updated 16 years, 12 months ago

Here’s the problem:

I have an HP w2007 with altec lansing bx1120 speakers, and a phillips webcam spc100NC w/ built-in mic, which also came bundled with a headset/mic unit.

The AL speakers, when plugged in stand-alone, work perfectly well.

i.e., if I plug the speakers into the rear jack, they play fine. when I plug the headset into the speakers I hear the speakers through the headset fine, but the moment I plug the microphone into the speakers, they quit playing either stand-alone, or through the headset. So I unplug the microphone.
The cord with jack for the microphone is now so far from anything that it can not be plugged anywhere else.

I want to be able to have the speakers and the headset/mic plugged in such that with an easy step I can have my mic plugged in am my sound diverted from the desktop speakers to mode where I can listen and not disturb others while listening to my own music, conversing or watching videos or movies.

Can anyone help?
