The sound bite explains itself. The battle of Balaklava was part of the English-Russian war in the Crimean, which was also a big part of setting the foundation for the Chechnya situation.

My favorite account isn't Tennyson, though! It's in either 'Flashman' or 'Royal Flash' (I forget which, it's been so long; one covers the Second Afghan War and the other the Crimean War), George MacDonald Fraser's hilarious 'eyewitness' accounts of history.
