Yanking our chain?

by Roger99a In reply to HEELLPP

Are you pulling our collective legs? You're a member since October 2006 and you are working on a 486? Really?

Please speak English..I didn't understand a single word

by Why Me Worry? In reply to HEELLPP

And why in the world are you running a dinosaur 486 PC? Banana file? What the ^%%#&/ ?

If this is some idiotic joke, then please take it elsewhere because we don't waste our time on such nonsense.

I do believe that there are a few 486 type machine out there but the rest doesn't make any sense. Try and elaborate please.

Yup, correct

I still have one. and use it too. Down right speedy little bugger, runs DOS 16 bit to a Forth program. down right perfect for setting up a machine.

Compaqs are special

by Kiltie In reply to HEELLPP

the Setup is stored in a special partition on the hard drive, press F10 to access it when booting.
If you still have the old hard drive, it may be there, maybe you can copy it, dunno.
Other alternatime is to visit Compaqs website and download a SoftPaq for your model.
I had a Prolinea once, took me a while to find this out.

Yes, 486s are alive and well, rumours of their demise are grossly exaggerated.

I have 2 of them ;-)

(one of them I hope to turn into a Linux box in the future, so I am keeping it - I have a Howto saved on the procedure for doing this on as little as a 386, with a 600MB Drive 16MB RAM)

Edit typo

Good

by dawgit In reply to Compaqs are special

good post there, totally correct, but sometomes it is hard to find exactly what for since HP took over compact. But one will need that from compact. As for the old 486ers see mine above, yup they're still alive. I know of business that still uses 1 with Win98, he refuses to up-grade, as long as does what he needs it to do. (can't blame him either)
