replicator virus

Well, i'm not sure if there is one that hides free space (though i suppose it is possible), but there is one that replicates a temp file over and over and over again to the point that it will start filling your hard drive...virus/malware scan should do the trick (usually works best when the drive is pulled and scanned from another that you can reload if it jumps over). I've seen quite a few of these over the years...

If it is not a virus, here is a tool to help you analyze just how much space is being taken by what. A free trial is available.

As stated above there are infections that can increase the Temp File/s

And I now find the easiest way to deal with them is from a Rescue Disc. This is something that goes in the Optical Drive and boots off the optical Disc generally a CD and has a OS and Tools to clean infections.

The advantage of cleaning this way is that there is no chance of a Cross Infection occurring. Here is a TR Article on Rescue Disc's.;leftCol
