How do i stop XP professional from hanging at the load up of windows? it forces me to restart the computer and i must do this many times before it logs in.

does it do this in safe mode? tap f8 key while it is restarting and pick Safe Mode. see if it starts faster then. if yes, use Start/Run/msconfig to see what is trying to load at startup. maybe you have a worm?

Sounds like you have the sasser worm. You must download stinger to remove it. Then you must go to windows update with the patch they have.

I have two hardware-based solutions...

1) If you just recently updated drivers for some hardware, you may want to roll them back. I had numerous problems upgrading my nVidia card's drivers after a particular version (I now own an ATI card).

2) If you have recently inserted a new expansion card (sound, tv capture, etc.) try setting the cards in different slots. Cards still use interrupt requests after all and some may conflict.
