Help crack the case of the lost network connectivity

by ansugisalas . Updated 16 years ago

I recently changed ISPs, and connection type at the same time, from ADSL to Cable.
Now, at first it worked just fine, I connected with my notebook and everything was ok.
Then the day before yesterday, the connection was dead, or rather “had limited or no connectivity”… gah.
I fiddled with it for a long time, at the same time queueing with my ISP error support line.
My own adventures had no conclusive outcome, but eventually I got through to Support, and lo and behold their line to me was down and had to be reset.

This is where things get strange: I still had no connection, and after checking with my ISP again, and the line was up, I decided to rig up the old desktop and try from there. And it worked just fine.

So, somehow my notebook has become unable to renew it’s IP over the cable modem, but this doesn’t affect the line itself, or the modem – just the notebook.
I know, I know, the likely answer is that I broke something inadvertently, but beyond installing new drivers from Cisco, I did nothing untoward, and I’ve taken those out again too, with no effect.

So, I’d greatly appreciate any ideas on where to start looking…
